How AutosXchange price analysis works

Every vehicle page has an AutosXchange Intel section that compares the dealer’s asking price with similar vehicles listed for sale right now. Here is exactly what it compares and what it leaves out.

Last updated November 6, 2026.

1. What is compared

Live asking prices from dealer listings on AutosXchange for the same make, model and trim, the same condition (new or used) and the same powertrain (for example hybrid or plug-in hybrid), within one model year (the exact year when at least five are listed). Trim names are normalized, so “XLT SuperCrew 4WD 3.5L V6” and “XLT” count as the same trim. When fewer than three of that trim are listed nationwide, the comparison widens in this order: the trim family (for example “XLE” covers “XLE Premium”), all trims of the model, new and used together, and finally all powertrains.

2. Where the comparable listings come from

Local first. AutosXchange looks for comparable listings within 50 miles of the selling dealer, then 100 miles, then 250 miles, then the dealer’s state, and finally nationwide. It uses the first area that has at least three comparable listings from at least two different dealers, so one dealer’s own prices never count as “the market”, and a car is not judged against a more expensive region.

3. Mileage adjustment

For used vehicles, when at least eight comparable listings publish their mileage, AutosXchange fits a price-versus-mileage line to them and calculates the expected price at this car’s mileage (the median price, adjusted along that line, never by more than ±40%). With fewer listings, only comparables with similar mileage (within about ±30% or ±15,000 miles) are used. The rating compares the asking price with this expected price.

4. How to read the gauges

5. What is not included

When fewer than three comparable listings exist, the price is not rated; any similar listings found are still shown. All numbers come from real current listings; nothing is estimated or invented.

Questions

What prices does AutosXchange compare?

Current asking prices advertised by dealers for similar vehicles that are listed for sale right now. They are not completed sale prices, appraisals or trade-in values.

Which vehicles count as similar?

The same make, model and trim in the same condition (new or used) and the same powertrain, within one model year. If fewer than three such listings exist nationwide, the comparison widens step by step: the trim family, then all trims of the model, then new and used together.

How far away are the comparable listings?

Listings within 50 miles of the selling dealer are used first, then 100 miles, then 250 miles, then the dealer’s state, then the whole country. The first area with at least three comparable listings from at least two dealers is used.

Is mileage taken into account?

Yes, for used vehicles. When at least eight comparable listings publish their mileage, the expected price is adjusted along the price-versus-mileage trend of those listings (capped at ±40% of the median). Otherwise only listings with similar mileage are compared.

What is not included?

Options and packages, the vehicle’s condition, accident or ownership history, dealer fees, taxes and incentives. A car can be priced higher or lower for these reasons; check the dealer’s listing and the CARFAX report when available.

Why does a car show no price rating?

A rating needs at least three comparable listings. With fewer, the page still shows the similar listings found, but does not rate the price.
