EV, PHEV or hybrid?

Which electrified vehicle fits you?

Battery-electric (EV / BEV) — runs only on electricity from its battery; charged from the grid. No gasoline engine.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) — a battery you charge from the grid for a shorter all-electric range, plus a gasoline engine that takes over when the battery is depleted.

Hybrid (HEV) — a gasoline engine helped by an electric motor and small battery that recharges itself (braking and the engine). It never plugs in.

Federal tax credit

Federal EV tax credits ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025

New Clean Vehicle Credit (30D): Not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle acquired on or before that date (binding written contract and a payment) can still qualify when placed in service later.
Previously-Owned (Used) Clean Vehicle Credit (25E): Not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (home and business EV chargers) (30C): Available only for property placed in service from January 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026, at a location in an eligible census tract. Chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026 do not qualify.

State, local and utility programs may still apply — see EV incentives by state and federal tax credit details.
