Methodology

How these numbers are calculated

  • Data: dealer-advertised asking prices of every listing on AutosXchange, observed at each dealer inventory scan and in a daily snapshot, VIN by VIN, since Nov 5, 2026. Not sold or transaction prices.
  • Same-store price change (movers): the median asking price of the same listings (present at the start of the period and now) at both dates. Because the cars are the same, mix changes do not move the number. Not seasonally adjusted.
  • Thresholds: a cohort (model year, make and model) is shown only with at least 30 listings from at least 5 dealers, no dealer above 40% of them. Sample sizes (n listings, d dealers) are shown with every figure.
  • Price cuts: a price change of at least $50 and at most 40% (larger jumps are treated as data errors). "Price-cut share" = listings with at least one cut in the window ÷ listings tracked in the window.
  • Fastest-selling: median days from first listing to removal from the dealer's website, for cars first listed after the dealer's first week on AutosXchange (cars already in stock when we started tracking have unknown start dates). "Removed from sale" is not a confirmed sale.
  • Dealer price actions: one dealer changing the asking price of 3 or more units of the same make and model on the same day.
