FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?
At the U.S. average residential price of 18.19¢ per kWh (EIA, Year-to-Date through August 2026), an EV using 37 kWh per 100 miles costs about $6.73 per 100 miles, or $808 for 12,000 miles.
Which states have the cheapest electricity for charging an EV?
By EIA average residential price (Year-to-Date through August 2026): North Dakota 12.46¢/kWh, Nebraska 12.92¢/kWh, Idaho 13.02¢/kWh. Most expensive: Hawaii 46.41¢/kWh, California 32.58¢/kWh, Maine 30.23¢/kWh.
Is public fast charging more expensive than charging at home?
Usually. Public DC fast chargers set their own prices (per kWh, per minute or by membership plan) and these are typically higher than residential electricity rates; check the network's app for the station you will use.
Do utilities offer cheaper electricity for EV charging?
Many do, through time-of-use or EV-specific rates that lower the price overnight, plus charger rebates. See utility EV programs by state on AutosXchange (from the U.S. Department of Energy AFDC).

AutosXchange market data is calculated from the asking prices of current dealer listings on AutosXchange, refreshed as dealers update their inventory. These are not sold or transaction prices and not appraisals. Listings with an asking price under $500 (placeholder prices) are excluded. Confirm price, fees and availability with the selling dealer.
